Sometimes we all get caught up in searching for “The Best Anti-Acne Products” and the like, but did we ever think of “What have I been eating to have this skin condition?”?
You might have heard before, what goes on the inside reflects what’s on the outside. And the same goes for our skin. Little we knew that our missing piece to clear and glowing skin is right in our pantry.
I listed here three of my personally favorite recipes and let’s dive deep into the magical ingredients and see how they’re great for our skin!
Morning Elixir (apple cider vinegar, lemon, honey, chia seeds)
I’ve encountered this recipe before in its simple form (acv + water) to aid my metabolism. Yup, we all went there. But then there’s lemon, honey, and chia seeds that made it more enjoyable for me! Aside from it being vegan and gluten-free, Morning Elixir is raved by many because of its metabolism and skin benefits.
Key Ingredients
Chia Seeds
Chia seeds was recognized as a superfood as these tiny seeds are packed with fiber, protein, omega-3, and antioxidants! My eyes went big with that ~antioxidant~
Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV contains acetic acid and malic acid. Acetic acid has antifungal and antibacterial properties while malic acid decreases melanin production. Together, this helps lighten hyperpigmentation.
Lemon
Lemon is loaded with Vitamin C that helps increase the production of collagen in our body, which in turn helps with our skin elasticity.
Honey
Honey contains a number of antioxidants. It has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects that our skin needs if we are suffering from acne.
Recipe
Mix all together:
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1/2 juiced lemon
- 1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar
- 1 1/2 cups water
- Optional: raw honey of your preferred amount
Golden Milk (milk of your choice, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, pepper, honey)
Golden milk has been long enjoyed by Indians and is gaining popularity nowadays because of its benefits. This drink boosts the immune system (which may I note, is very important now in the middle of a pandemic), has anti-inflammatory benefits, and makes you sleep better! This can be enjoyed both hot and cold. I prefer this hot because it’s like a hug in a cup!
Key Ingredients:
Ginger
Even our grandmothers know that ginger is a healing plant. Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties with that spicy zing!
Turmeric
Considered as the ~*liquid sunshine*~, turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. And to all my acne-prone gals and guys out there, we all know that acne is an inflammatory condition. Better address it from the inside, right?
Pepper
Haha! I know, pepper on my drink? Really? Yes! Pepper is our little friend here. Pepper aids in the better absorption of turmeric up to 2000%. That means the benefits of the mighty turmeric multiplied by 20!
Recipe:
- 1 cup milk of your choice
- 1 inch freshly grated turmeric root or ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
- ½ inch freshly grated ginger root or ¼ teaspoon ginger powder
- 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
- pinch of ground black pepper
- Optional: raw honey of your preferred amount
Simply mix all ingredients in a saucepan and simmer until fragrant and flavorful. Strain the drink into your favorite mug and top with a pinch of cinnamon.
Golden Glow Elixir (turmeric, ginger, lemon, honey)
This drink is known as Jamu Juice originating from Bali, Indonesia. If Morning Elixir and Golden Milk had a child, this is it. Getting the turmeric benefits plus the fresh citrus taste! You can make this, too, in big batches that you can enjoy throughout the day. Enjoy with ice!
Recipe:
- ½ teaspoon turmeric powder or boiled turmeric roots water
- ½ juiced lemon
- Boiled ginger water
- 1 cup water
- Optional: raw honey of your preferred amount
Cliché as it may sound but we are really what we eat. It’s important to observe how our body and skin reacts to what we eat. Tell us which of the recipes is your favorite!
